How it works
An elemental formula contains nutrients in their simplest form: amino acids, simple carbohydrates, fats, vitamins and minerals. They are absorbed in the first part of the small intestine, leaving little to nothing for the bacteria further down to ferment. The overgrowth is, in effect, starved.
When it can be considered
- When other intervention strategies have not given sufficient results
- With high gas levels or a methane-dominant pattern
- When someone cannot tolerate supplements or medication
- When a strong, time-limited reset is preferred
What to expect
An elemental diet typically lasts two to three weeks. The first days can be tough: hunger, low energy and a change in bowel movements are common. Taste and cost are real hurdles. Good preparation and a clear plan for reintroducing food afterwards are essential to avoid a quick relapse.
Not for everyone
People with diabetes, a history of eating disorders, low body weight, pregnancy or other medical conditions need extra caution. An elemental diet should always be done in consultation with your physician.
After the elemental diet
Stopping is the most important moment. Food is reintroduced step by step, and we move straight into the recovery and relapse-prevention phase: gut repair, supporting motility and — later — rebuilding the microbiome.
